London’s Best Events in June

With the summer coming round the corner, and the weather warming up, we welcome in the most exciting time in London. Whilst many of the winter festivities may bring the city to light, this summer has some of the most interesting events lined up. Here’s just a snapshot of some of the best events to happen this June, and we’ll highlight each month as they approach.

Sunset Safari, London Zoo

The London Zoo is allowing after-hour access to exclusive feedings, sleep schedules, and a self-guided safari trail which is packed full of a variety of animals, performances in the Theatre of Life, and a glimpse into the often unseen life schedules of animals.

At the end of the tour, or if you’re looking for a break, there will be some live acoustic music in the Safari Base Camp, and there’s a world food market if you’re looking to grab a bite too.

If you’re looking to grab tickets, you can do so from the London Zoo Website.

Cockpit Arts Open Studios, Deptford

This craft business incubator is celebrating 30-years of helping and championing British makers with their crafts. They have a variety of open studios which offer individuals the chance to see the work of 200 artists in two venues, and the chance to meet and discuss their work in person. It provides a new outlook and perspective on the ideas of crafts, bringing you the whole process from start to finish.

More information can be found on the Cockpit Arts Website.

Pop Fields, Brixton

If you’re looking to enjoy the London sunshine in the culturally active Brixton, Pop Fields is a great place to be. Boasting a huge screen for major sporting events, a series of food stalls and bars, this place is a wonderful place to hang out with friends and watch the sporting events of the summer. It’s also a stone’s throw from Brixton Market, which is a great sight to see in itself.

More information can be found on the Pop Brixton Website.

Opening of the new Tate Modern, South Bank

This is a big advancement for the London based gallery. On June 17, the new Tate Modern building extension, at 10-storeys high, will be unveiled and known as The Switch House. It is designed by Herzog & de Meuron, Swiss Architects, and the building is designed to provide 60% more exhibition space and allow for a restructuring of the Tate Modern’s permanent collection across both buildings.

This is a major step for the art industry in London, and many are very excited to see how the new building will influence the Bankside art scene.

Trooping the Colour, St James’ Park

The annual event celebrating the Queen’s birthday, the Horse Guards Parade dress in full military ceremonial gear whilst the Queen inspects the troops. She then leads the troop down to Buckingham Palace, where the Queen salutes, guns are fired, and she then joins her family to watch the Royal Air Force fly past.

The Trooping the Colour ceremony has existed in various forms since the 1700s, but was fully restored in 1820 on the accession of King George IV.

The event takes place on the 11th June 2016.
