Mayfair is named after the annual two week May Fair that took place on the site that is today Shepherd Market. Most of the area, and some of the very first Mayfair apartments, were developed between the mid 17th century and the mid 18th century, in what was then a fashionable residential district. Today, Mayfair apartments are regarded as being among the most fashionable in London.
